This is a representation of the 8 Moon Phases in the Southern Hemisphere (rather than the Northern Hemisphere, where the phases are round the other way). The visible part of the moon is raised and shown with a 'moon' texture. The dark part of the Moon is lower than the visible moon and shown with a smooth texture and a contrasting colour (black).
