Moses with boards. The statue is depicted with sticks on its head. [2][3][3][4][5] It is believed that this feature comes from an error in St. Jerome's translation of Exodus chapter 34:29-35. [6] In this text, Moses is characterized as having karan ohr panav ("a face from which rays of light emanated"),[7][8] which St. Jerome in the Vulgate translated by cornuta esset facies sua ("his face was horned"). The error in translation is possible because the Hebrew triliteral root krn (in Hebrew vowels are not written) can be rendered "karan", luminosity, radiance, or "keren", horn. The spirit of the work, however, can be seen in the figure of the Moses, completed during one of the restarts of the work in 1513. Designed to be viewed from below, and balanced by seven other huge forms of similar subject matter, the present Moses, in its derisory context compared to the original project, can hardly have the impact intended by the artist. The leader of Israel is presented seated, with the Tablets of the Law under his arm, while with the other hand he strokes the curls of his beard. The imagination can place this depiction of Moses in the ecstatic passage after receiving the Commandments on Mount Sinai, while, in the valley at the foot of the mountain, the people of Israel once again indulge in idolatry. Again, Michelangelo uses an upturned head, concentrating an expression of tremendous anger that is also reflected in the statue's powerful build and in his eyes. #moises #fgarte
