Scientists have been thrilled with the wealth of data pouring in from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter after it completed a seven-month cruise to Mars and six months of aerobraking to reach its ideal science orbit. The orbiter's advanced instruments are now actively seeking out the fascinating history of water on Mars, capturing stunning close-up photographs of the martian surface with precision, analyzing minerals, and tracing the distribution of dust and water in the atmosphere. Additionally, the orbiter is monitoring daily global weather patterns with great accuracy. Following a two-year primary science phase that successfully met all its ambitious goals, the mission has been extended twice, with the latest extension beginning in 2010, resulting in an even greater bounty of valuable scientific returns.
