Why was this important to Philippine history? Significance & Research The Object: *Symbolic: Philippine Map with "Laban" hand sign. Details about the Object: The hand is making an "L" hand symbol. President Corazon Aquino often used this hand sign to represent "Laban", a tagalog word for "fight". This was often used during the EDSA Revolution of 1986, the "People's Revolution", which can also be said in Tagalog as "Lakas ng Bayan", abbreviated as "Laban" (Laban, January 2016). President: Corazon Aquino served 1986-1992 Contribution: (Who, What, Where, When, Why): Chief Executive/ Chief Legislator Proclaimed a Provisional Constitution to return power to a republic form of government. President Corazon Aquino was elected president, replacing dicator president Ferdinanad Marcos who had ruled for twenty years and had instituted martial law from 1972- 1981. President Aquino ended the constitution under President Marcos which had eliminated the Congress, she instituted a Provisional Constitution until a new Congress could be elected to create a new Constitution with proper checks and balances. Impact on the Philippines: "I choose this object because it represents this very important act by the President" As one of her first acts as President, Aquino brought the power of the government back to the people, via an elected legislature.
