Nail Shield

Even into 2018, the nail clipper design has not had a significant change since it was first created in the mid-1900s. The snapping action of this design unpredictably flings nail clippings through the air and means that there is still no way for people to clip their nails without making a mess. The Nail Shield is a brand new product that will solve this problem for everyone. It is a universal solution that can fit onto any set of toe or fingernail clippers and catch the erratically flying nail clippings. The Nail Shield design consists of a doughnut shape that acts as a shield to catch nail clippings and store them until it is emptied after a nail clipping session. A platform extends from one side to the center of the of the shield with two clips that snap into fingernail or toenail clippers around the center bar. This design can only be made by utilizing additive manufacturing processes because of the complex interior structures of the design. In this case, fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology will be used to create the design with ABS plastics. There are some solutions already in existence that can catch nails as they are clipped but these designs involve the purchase of a separate, new set of nail clippers. Everyone has fingernails and toenails and most people already own a pair nail clippers so solutions shouldn’t require people to buy new ones. This product takes anyone's household nail clippers and removes the mess simply and effortlessly. (This is a group project by Brenner Kar and Jake Klahorst)
