Nalgene Cap Retainer

Nalgene Cap Retainer

I have the habit of carrying my nalgene by its cap retainer - it just feels natural. Of course, the retainer is not designed for this and eventually breaks. I really don't like the idea of buying a new cap/strap since 1) nothing is actually wrong with the cap, so throwing it away is just wasteful and 2) a new strap is just going to break again, so it doesn't even really solve the problem. This design has the following features: -prints easily (no supports, rafts, or post-processing) -installs easily (other iterations required over-stressing the part to get it over the bottle) -swivels easily to allow for cap to be screwed on or removed without binding (something I couldn't achieve with just paracord) -it's strong enough to carry by the strap (I've used this daily for several months with absolutely no issues) My designs typically involve the use of COTS (common off the shelf) parts. In this case, it requires the use of a small length of paracord tied in a loop through both pieces. The loop serves both as the strap and as the means by which the "split rings" are held together. This also allows the load to be evenly distributed between both printed parts. Prior design iterations included a ring opposite the paracord loops, but this tended to cause the split rings to "open up" - no bueno. The paracord loop itself is adequate for adding carabiners, keychains, or whatever else you would want to hang on a water bottle.
