Nexus 6p Charging Dock A simple, dock with a nice snug fit for the Nexus 6P and OEM charging cable. The crossbar in the back prevents the cable from flipping the whole thing over. Never mind those holes in the back. They're a vestigial remnant from a failed attempt at a cable lock. :) The curved shape in the back of this dock serves to minimize volume (for faster printing), and also makes it easy to pick the whole thing up and type while the phone is still docked. Note: This dock is designed for a snug fit with a naked phone. It will not fit with any sort of case or screen cover. I started with a rough model of the 6p and OEM USB C cable. Next, I arranged these models and aligned them to fit one another. Then, using an isometric view, I drew a 2d spline with a pleasing shape for the dock that fit around both phone and cable. Since I wanted to minimize the amount of material used, I created an alternate profile for the middle of the dock to reduce the volume. To create the 3d shape, I copied these profiles and arranged them symmetrically in the appropriate position relative to the phone, and used the "loft" tool to smoothly fill in the 3d shape bounded by the 3d profiles. I then used Meshmixer to double check the stability, to make sure the dock would not tip over when the phone is pressed down into it. Finally, I subtracted the phone and USB cable models from the resulting shape, and scaled up the whole thing by 1% to allow for a good fit.
