The Nike Smoke was a sounding rocket to study the behavior of the horizontal winds in the upper atmosphere. It was developed by NASA in the 1960s based on the Nike booster. This is a scale 1/12.4 replica that when completed stands 468.5mm (18.44") tall and uses an Estes BT-55 body tube. This is version version 2 and differs from version 1 in that it is designed so that no painting is required. Version 1 can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3196722 You will need the following: 1 x BT-20 127mm (5.00") long 1 x Engine hook (or friction fit engine) 1 x 304.8mm (12") Parachute 1 x Shock cord 2 x "UNITED STATES" decals which you will have to make and print out. Instructions tips: - Always test fit the parts first. - Make sure the nose cone fits in the body tube loosely but does not fall out when pointing to the ground. - My recommendation is to use 5 min Epoxy for the complete build. - Slightly spread a very thin amount of epoxy glue inside the fin notch walls and then insert the printed fin. - Use the positioning tool for engine block placement and for engine hook slot position. - It is not necessary to glue the engine hook retainer in place. This way you can remove the engine hook for a nicer static display model. Beware however due to heat from the motor that the retainer will shrink making it hard or impossible to remove again. - See picture for fin placement (complete rocket white, 3 fins red and one fin yellow). - I would recommend placing some sort of protection inside the parachute compartment to keep the printed tube from ejection residue. I use paper placed (not glued) against the inside wall. - To make sure the nose cone and the fin can fit the body tube you might want to print the lower portion of the nose cone first and test fit it to the body tube. If too tight or too loose scale the objects accordingly. You may also slightly sand the shoulder to get a good fit. - I've added pictures to aid in construction. This rocket flies great on B6-4 and C6-5 rocket engines. Download the files only if you are going to start in printing the parts because I might have done some required design tweaks/changes which will be noted below as revisions. I would love to see your results! Please support my work by giving me a tip if you find my contribution useful. Thanks. Leo ---------------------------- Revisions: - 06.01.2019: First public release. - 20.01.2019: Added 2 part nose cone for printers that can't print the full length. - 20.01.2019: Added a scaled 2 square feet version of the fin. - 20.01.2019: Added prototype nose cone used on the maiden flight.
