Oculus Quest 2 Controller Grip with Knuckle Strap

Oculus Quest 2 Controller Grip with Knuckle Strap

I wanted a grip cover for my Oculus Quest 2 controllers that adds a Knuckles-style strap which allows the controllers to stay in place even when your grip is opened. The most popular such retail grip cover out there with this feature appears to be the AMVR Touch Controller Grip Cover, but while this grip is listed as supporting Quest 2, it's really just the Quest 1 version that almost, but not quite fits the Quest 2. I tried this product out, and other than not fitting very well, I found that the molding on the grip itself didn't fit my hands well...I ended up with seams and ridges in uncomfortable places across my fingers. In addition, I found the placement of the elastic bands had a tendency to push my hands too far up on the controller, forcing a very different hold on the controllers than I would naturally have, and also making it awkward to reach some of the buttons (the menu/oculus buttons in particular). I also find the bare Oculus Touch controllers to be almost perfect in terms of their shape and comfort, and in general have found that the extra bulk added by most grip covers is a step in the wrong direction. Facebook (well, originally Oculus) did a pretty good job on ergonomics with the Touch controllers, so why mess with that? My solution was to design a grip cover that is about as thin as possible, follows the original contours of the Quest 2 Touch Controller, and includes a strap placement that supports my natural hold on the controller. This design is the result of a lot of trail and error and a lot of test prints to fine tune the placement of the straps, but I'm very pleased with the results. One caveat, these were custom designed for my hands, so your mileage may vary depending on hand size, how you hold the controllers, etc...but that's pretty much true of any such product, I suppose. <underline><strong>Assembly Instructions</strong></underline> For the elastic band, I used this: [Silicone Backed Gripper Elastic from Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083S7WJMT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I cut about a 12" strip of the elastic, threaded it through the top loop once and doubled it over with the silicone strips facing each other (facing inside). Both ends are then threaded through the bottom loop. The very tip of the bottom strip is doubled over with just enough overlap to staple it with a standard office staple. The bottom strip is then pulled tight, and the top strap can be adjusted so that it has bit of adjustable range. Leave it a bit longer than you plan to wear it and then clip it's end to the desired length. Repeat the process of folding the very tip of the bottom strap over and staple the end, as with the bottom strip. Optionally use a lighter to melt the raw tip end of each band a little to prevent fraying. When worn, the bottom strap is pulled tight and goes under the hand, and top strip passes over the back of the hand just behind the knuckles. The two silicone surfaces facing each other as they pass through the bottom loop provides just enough tension so that the top straps tightness can be easily adjusted on the fly, but won't slip on it's own. The silicone strip in contact with the hand on both the front and back of the hand also helps to prevent controller slippage when your grip is opened. There is a small hole at the bottom to allow the original wrist strap to be retained and passed through, if desired. Can be nice if you want to completely remove the controllers from your hands at times without needing to set them down. Happy Printing. I would love to hear in the comments if you use this model.
