The oldest confirmed example of a man-made cave in Iceland lies hidden within the earth at Odda in Rangárvellir, its entrance guarded by a turf-covered ruin. Carved out around the midpoint of the 10th century AD, this underground structure went out of use before the end of the 12th century. Iceland's Institute of Archaeology has taken charge of excavations here as part of Oddarannsókn, a research project backed by the Oddafélag society and funded through Ritmenning íslenskra miðalda (RÍM). A three-dimensional representation of this site was created by Punktaský.
