Onkyo Amplifier Mechanical IR Remote

Onkyo Amplifier Mechanical IR Remote

thingiverse

A mechanical remote volume control solution for my older Onkyo Integra amplifier. The wheel presses on top of the volume control knob of the amp. A stepper turns this wheel and thus can change the volume on the receiver. The stepper is controlled by an arduino nano with an attached IR receiver, so any IR remote can be used to control this abomination. **BOM:** 1x TSOP4838 38 KHz IR Receiver Module 1x 28YBJ-48 Stepper motor 1x ULN2003 Stepper driver 1x Arduino Nano 1x Sponge wheel of appropriate size 1x M3x30 screw as shaft 1x 3M Dual Lock tape **Assembly** Connect the IR Receiver to Pin 2 of the arduino and flash the ir_test.ino file. Put your remote in front of the receiver, and press the buttons which you want to use to control the device. Note down the code that is output in the serial console for both buttons. Put the code values you noted down into the appropriate defines at top of the amp_remote_nec.ino and flash it to the arduino. Connect the electronics to the pins as defined in the code. Test that the stepper turns as desired when the button on the remote is pressed. Print the case and coupling, fasten the electronics in the case (I used some wire instead of M1.4 screws for the arduino), then attach the wheel to the stepper using the coupling and the M3 screw as a shaft. Depending on the size of your wheel and the distance to the volume knob, you can now directly attach the device to the top of the amplifier. I used 3M Dual Lock tape, which allows for disassembly and repositioning after the fact. For me, I could not find a wheel large enough to reach the knob. I therefore put it on an angle to get this extra distance. You can find attached two different size angle brackets to fit your needs. Print these twice and put it on each side of the bottom of the box so it's angled forward. **Notes** This is of course a stupid device, because I could just have solved this electronically by replacing the potentiometer in the amp. But this looks more fun.
