Problem: over time, the pinion and spur gear wear down. My engineering class has this problem when they use the original rear-end configuration to make their racers. We have printed the gears in several different materials, and it always seems to be the same problem no matter the material. Nylon, PETG, and ABS all work and work much better than PLA but we have to replace the gears ever so often with excessive use. I have wanted to find a better solution, and I feel this timing belt solution works well. Solution: Belt Drive system. This conversion is a timing belt pulley for the Open F1 racer. I have found the system will give you improved acceleration, deceleration, and torque. The system will not wear down as quickly, if at all, and is extremely simple to install. For my model here, I used a 60-tooth GT pulley from the McMaster-Carr catalog and remixed it so it would fit the Open F1 rear axle. You may wish to add more teeth for a larger gear ratio; if so, please let me know, and I will send you the STEP file. I have found 60 teeth to be adequate. You only need 3 parts aside from the printed rear axle and axle holders to make this simple conversion.

Printable GT timing belt pulley located for download on this page

Aluminum 16 tooth GT pulley from McMaster-Carr or other resource

Closed loop 140mm timing belt from Amazon or other resource.
