This relief is part of a set of many others with various subjects, all made to ornate the North side of the Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore.  Here the mythological charcter of Orpheus is represented. He embodies the art of music, as according to the legend, he played so well he enchanted all living being, and stones too. He is most known for his tragic end, trying to get his wife out of the Underground World.
