The decoration on this terracotta plate originates from Cocteau's 'Young Orpheus' etching, showing a portrait of the mythological figure with a lyre. The model for the etching was the artist's friend and lover, the famous French actor Jean Marais. Cocteau was a French poet, novelist, dramatist, designer and filmmaker and was a friend of Pablo Picasso, Edith Piaf, Victor Hugo, Arno Breker and many others of his époque.
