Oscillum

myminifactory

This is an Oscillum with the head of Jupiter Ammon facing forward and a theatrical mask on its reverse. The oscillum, a diminutive form of the Latin osculum, derived from os meaning "face," was a small sculpture representing a head that Romans used as a votive offering to tree fronds during festivities such as segetivae faeriae, or sowing parties, and paganalia, village celebrations honoring Bacchus. During Compitalia, Romans hung wooden figurines of family slaves and children in honor of the Lares. Over time, Oscilla evolved into decorative elements for homes and gardens, appearing in various forms like small discs in relief or rectangular plates carved on both sides. Typically made from stone, terracotta, or glass paste, these ornaments often showcased the head of Jupiter Ammon on one side and a theatrical mask on the other.
