We have been given a task to design a gearbox of a crane. There are some options of crane available and we decided to work on the double glider crane. We have done some research on examples of crane available on earth and manage to come up with own gear box design. It was a challenge for us because we need to design from scratch where we only have the value of load applied and the torque need. From the values given and with the equations from the text book we started to design gear shaft and bearing.Firstly, we started our design process with gears. We choose amount of gear used for this design based on the load applied at the drum. Then, we calculated the teeth of gears that required. On the other hand, based on gear we manage to calculate the size of shaft that needed to be fitted in gears and finally from the given catalogue we manage to choose the suitable bearings to hold the shaft. From this project, we learnt the step required and the values that needed to be assumed to design a double glider overhead crane. Moreover, we also learned the methods and formula that required for the calculation and choosing the best material for this design. We have designed our gearbox to live an infinite life cycle. We have learned how to overcome the stresses that could cause failure for a machine.As a future mechanical engineer, we feel machine design is an important subject and this project helped a lot for our studies. Although we faced many challenges during this project, we enjoyed working in a group where we discussed and learned stuff from the argument among us. From the design we have done with a safety factor 2, we can conclude that the objective of the project is achieved.
