OWI-535 Gamma Mods (2017 Science Olympiad)

thingiverse

This is a bolt on set of extensions that fit onto the OWI-535 Robotic Arm Edge for the 2017 division C Science Olympiad. It should be fully rules complaint but check dimensions before using this design. The Gamma Mods are designed to increase the overall reach of the OWI-535 Robotic Arm Edge by approximately 22.5 cm. Some of these parts require cutting part of the OWI-535 frame, which is a non reversible. Be certain you want to do these modifications before cuts are made. Additionally, most of the motors will require there wires to be extended. Also included are variants of the baseline Gamma Mod parts that offer extra rigidity. If either the Gamma - Insert or Gamma - Outer parts are flexing more then you are comfortable with, try the Wide or Tall variants before going to extra shells or infill. Design Project: Project Apollo ==================================================================== Printed Parts needed: 2x Gamma - Outer (or Gamma - Outer Tall) 2x Gamma - Insert (or Gamma - Insert Wide) ==================================================================== Hardware Needed: 4x M3x16 Bolts https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W97MTII/ 4x M3 nuts https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NBIH92/ ==================================================================== Info on Installing: Gamma - Outer : The Gamma Outer is a straight replacement for part E1 on the OWI-535. In step 23 Replace part E1 with the Gamma - Outer parts; all other parts in step 23 are the same. Gamma - Insert : The Gamma Insert parts are designed to bolt on to part E2 after it has been cut in half. The cut on part E2 should go the short way through the wire clip and across the 4 rigs and 3 valleys, see Pictures above. Once cut, clean any cuttings out of the valleys. Place the Gamma - Insert on the two cut halves of part E2 by sliding the ends of the Gamma - Insert into the valleys of the cut parts, see Pictures above. One the two halves of part E2 have been fully seated in the groves of the Gamma - Insert, use the holes on the Gamma - Insert as a template to drill through the part E2 with a 1/8" or 3mm drill bit. Feed 2x M3x16 Screws throw the new holes on the underside of the part E2 and into the holes on the Gamma - Insert, see Pictures above. Once the M3x16 bolts are fully through the the part E2 and the Gamma - Insert, install M3 nuts to the end of the M3x16 screws and tighten. Glue can be added to the Gamma Insert parts but it is not recommended, as it your removes the ability change out the Gamma Insert parts for the stronger variant or to replace broken parts. Once the Gamma Inserts have been bolted onto the part E2, use this new combined part in place of part E2 in step 25 of the instructions; all other parts in step 25 are the same. Wiring : Extent the wires going to the motors as needed. ==================================================================== Info on the Design: As I stated in the Info on the Design section of the OWI-535 Alpha Mods, the Alpha Mods were too heavy for the OWI-535. The Gamma Mods take the info I learned from the BeefyArm and applies it to the old Alpha Mods. The Gamma - Outers save about 1.7 grams over the original prints of the Alpha - Outers parts per extender. While minor, every gram saved reduces the stress on the plastic gears inside the OWI-535's motors. The big saving in mass is in the Gamma - Insert parts over the full Alpha - Insert pt 1 and 2. The combined Alpha - Insert pt 1 and 2 comes in at a hefty 19.3 grams without bolts per extender, while the new Gamma - Insert parts are merely 6.7 grams per extender without bolts. Additionally I have tried to balance the extenders so that the Insert parts are approximately in proportion to the Outer parts when compared to the original OWI design. I have also maximized the Gamma- Outer parts to the print length for my printer (a Rep1). Overall I am happy with how easy these parts are to print and install. With the addition of through part E2 installation, the Gamma Mods offer quick to replace and secure extensions for the OWI-535. Note: At time of upload, the design has not been tested in competition and has no guarantee of performance. Note: All extenders will add stress to the motors of the robot. Use at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage that may occur. Use cautiously as this may led to stripped or otherwise damaged gears in the OWI-535. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 1 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: .2 Infill: 15% Notes: Printed with 2 shells. At above print setting, mass of the Gamma - Insert was about 6.7 grams using Toy Builder Labs Black 1.75mm PLA At above print setting, mass of the Gamma - Outer was about 12 grams using Toy Builder Labs Black 1.75mm PLA If extra strength is needed start by trying the Wide or Tall variants.
