Inspired by my childhood obsession with Peter Pan, here is your very own pan flute. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: No Supports: No Infill: 20% How I Designed This The CADing of the flute was relatively easy. You can establish which set of notes you would like to build with a couple of easy physics equations. From those equations you can determine the length of each of your pan flute tubes. I also made sure to slightly overlap the tubes to ensure that they printed as one solid unit. Project : Pan Flute Objectives: this project is a great way to introduce the concept of waves and music. Physics and music are interlinked and this pan flute makes for an easy demonstration. Audience: Grades 9-12 Preparation : No prep is required to use this pan flute in an educational setting. Suggested concepts to introduce: sound waves in tubes (open vs closed pipes, standing waves), how length of tube and frequency are related, what happens if you were to scale up/down the size of the pan flute. An easy google search will reveal the frequencies of modern concert pitches. Equation to explore: Length = velocity/(4*frequency) Steps: Introduce the concept of of sound waves to the students. Show them the Pan Flute and let them experiment with it. optional: Make them design their own Results: The idea of this project is to combine physics and music. Grading schemes can include how well the student calculates the length of the pan flute and what notes they were intending to create and how clearly the flute plays.
