Parametric Filling System Model for Metal Casting

This is a parametric OpenSCAD model for producing filling systems for casting metal using sand molds.

It implements the principles developed by Dr John Campbell in his casting research. These principles are summarized in the attached PDF document.

Based on the characteristics of the piece being cast, the metal used, and the casting flask, this model will produce the ideal filling system to minimise turbulence and bubble entrapment in the molten metal.

The model consists of a pouring basin, sprue, runner, spin trap, gates, and risers. The parts are split up for easy printing. The sprue and spin trap vent have a single flat side so that they can be printed on their side instead of needing to print a tall, extremely thin part.

The model will handle two and three part flasks, and allows you to import an STL, 3MF, or OpenSCAD file of the pattern you are trying to cast.

Updates

10 July 2022 - Version 1.2 - Added ability to rotate basin, vertical gates, and set angle of gates

7 October 2022 - Version 1.3 - Fixed issues with separating the system parts when a cheek is used. Added ability to rotate and translate the pattern on all axis.
