1; Horizontal System. (as requested) A drawer unit with a magnetic latch bolt and proximity sensor in a seperate rear maintenance compartment. A full drawer lid swivels on a hinge at the back of the drawer and activates these instruments for feedback to the controller. The drawer is a complete unit which can be installed in a frame and wired at the back. The frame has a roller on the top of the opening for each drawer. This roller ensures that the lid is closed fully when the drawer is pushed into the frame. (The lid is made of 2mm plate) If an attempt is made to fit an oversize package, the lid will not pass under the roller and the instruments will not activate. The Lid idea is an old solution, the difference here is the thickness of the plate and the roller. These provide a solid barrier. My own personal preference is for a vertical solution. (see below). But I have tried to meet the challenge guidelines. Updated 3rd Feb; 1; Spring assist for lid added. Compression spring used in an enclosed self aligning chamber. This is fail safe even if a spring breaks. 2; 15 degree angled slots added to the top roller housing in the frame, this allows for easy opening of the drawer in the event of an attempted forced closure. The rollers lift up and back when the drawer is opening. 3; Roller added below the drawer at the front. This takes the load off of the drawer slide mechanism. (a lighter slide can be used). 4; A middle top roller added in the event of the contents expanding over time while inside the drawer. 5; Leaf spring added to eject drawer 30mm when magnetic bolt is activated. The spring acts as a soft closure for drawers that are slammed closed. The leaf spring doubles as a catch to engage with the bolt when the drawer is pushed closed. Components selected to increase reliability and reduce maintenance wear and tear. 1; The proximity switch is non contact, unlike a limit switch no mechanical wear can take place. 2; The rollers do not make contact unless an oversize parcel is attempted to be forced into the drawer. Otherwise they do not make contact in everyday operations. 3;The magnetic bolts are normally held in their extended position by a spring. The electric magnet is only activated (retracted) to allow an action to take place. Updated 4th Feb; 1; A vertical stop bar added both sides of the drawers. This bar engages with two leaf spring catches on the rear of the drawer, The spring delivers a soft stop and reduce wear on the stop bar. Access to the top of the cabinet by the service technician allows for all drawers to be unlocked. Lifting the bar handle off the locked pin, rotating through 15 degrees to the open position pin holds the stop while servicing the drawer. . Updated 16th feb; Front image added, Proposal completed. - Good luck to all designers taking part in the challenge. Use the 3D viewer sectioning tool to see the details. . . . . 2; Vertical System (alternative design) Also shown is the same drawer unit mounted in a vertical rack. By swivelling the adjoining units out of the way there is not a problem with access, even to the smallest drawer. This configuration eliminates the cost and reliability issues associated with the horizontal system. It is also more versatile than a drawer system. Example a vertical unit could be 300mm wide x 150mm deep and 2000mm high. Fishing rods, golf clubs etc..could be delivered with this size. It could also be 800mm wide x 150mm deep and 1500mmm high. Paintings etc.. could be accomodated.
