This fan duct allows you to replace the blower-style part cooling fan with a more-typical 40mm flat fan (like a Noctua) while maintaining the high pressures and flow speeds you get from a blower-style fan. This design is based on my cursory understanding of fluid dynamics. Assuming airflow is roughly parallel coming out of the fan, the duct directs the flow smoothly down to the cool the part. Air is focused near the extruder nozzle at a high speed, while allowing a much wider range of fan options. For my build, I also used a "Static Pressure Booster" from ebijma (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3361687) to maintain higher pressures within the nozzle.
