Periodic Density

Periodic Density

thingiverse

My first upload! This is a 3D periodic table, with the relative height of an element representing its density. (The first of many "periodic trends" I hope to print.) Instructions (You might prefer "various periodic tables" instead...it includes the density, but also other trends.) Hey! I've just started larnin' me this stuff! The openscad file is not elegant (yet), but if you want to play with it here it is. I designed a spreadsheet to take any "periodic" data and write the source code for an openscad file that will render boxes representing the elements. The raw data is converted so that the greatest value among the elements makes a box 3 cm high. It uses to put the symbols for the elements on the boxes. This should be great for any chemistry teacher trying to show how the elements' properties are related to their positions on the periodic table (and thus to electronic configurations.) If this upload works, I can upload ionization energy, electron affinity, effective nuclear charge -- you name it! (Please let me know if you find this useful,or can suggest modifications -- for example, for some I'll leave off the labels and make identification for those a puzzle for my students.)
