The base makes sure that the charger is well aligned with the phone, even if you put it away without looking. It's been optimized for the Pixel 6 Spigen Thin Fit cover and the Baseus Simple Mini 3 wireless charger (although it does fit the Baseus Simple Mini Magnetic charger too) The square cutout in the middle was for the double-sided M3 tape to keep the charger in place, but it didn't prove necessary in my case. The cutout in the bottom is where the indicator led is - if you put the base on the glass surface you can see if the phone is charging based on the faint underglow Fusion 360 source files included
