I recently started to pick up recreational running after school. Gradually I became more capable of running longer distances, up to 8 miles. I have a hard time staying hydrated even when I am not running, sometimes I run for an hour and not drink a drop of water which is quite damaging to my body. One of the main problems I have is carrying water on runs, I go for long stretches of off-shoot roads that do not have adequate locations for disposal of water bottles. Holding the water while I run is not much of a problem at the start,I can cradle it like a football, however, as I grow fatigue my arms wear out and naturally I drink the water to stay hydrated. There are trails I go on that I would like to remain undisturbed with human trash so I end up stuffing the water bottle in my pockets which can feel awkward or just grasp it with my hands, if I do not have pockets, for the remaining run. My runs can last for up to an hour and a half, which means I end up holding a used water bottle, wasting energy. My model for the Extreme Redesign Challenge tackles this problem I have by providing a personal method for me to “carry” this disposable plastic water bottle for the remainder of my runs. The top clip is securely fastened to the neck of the bottle just below the cap. Typically, I crush my plastic water bottles in order to minimize the space it takes up. The sloped design takes this into account by giving the crushed water bottle area to remain undisturbed. The bottom of the holder features a open ring with 8 tiny extruded groves that are just the right size to fit over a water bottle cap and open it. My hands get extremely sweaty during the summer heat in Florida so I know this will help me open bottles when I desperately need it. I have slits cut out from the two main angled beams in order for my shoelaces to wrap around and be tied to. In addition the slits are a way to save printer filament when manufacturing. By tying the water bottle holder to my shoelaces, it eliminates me from having to physically carry any weight with my hands, allowing my to free swing my arms to achieve the most efficient way to run. The usage of my model will ultimately encourage me to run for further distances without having to worry about disposing of plastic water bottles or staying hydrated.Advanced Manufacturing: The efficiency comes from the versatility that 3D printing has. Without the use of injection or plastic molds to shape certain plastic products that are mass manufactured, the flexibility 3D printing offers is unmatched. By changing a few parameters and filament types, several different products can be made on the same bed without having to switch out an entire assembly line of machines that are strictly bound to manufacture one particular object.
