Pontefract Castle Gatehouse (pre-excavation)

We’re unearthing the castle’s medieval gatehouse, which was added in the 1300s. Once known as the ‘Key to the North’, and described by Cromwell as ‘the strongest inland garrison in the country’, the castle was torn down at the end of the English Civil War. Today, all that remains are a few ruins, and our team is just starting to expose what’s left of the gatehouse. You can see more updates from the excavation at digventures.com/pontefract-castle
