Popsicle Stick Bridge

Popsicle Stick Bridge

For an awesome class at Olin called Mech Solids (Intro to Mechanical Solids and Structures) we designed and built a bridge out of popsicle sticks, then put it through catastrophic load failure (our teacher put his weight on it). Our bridge weighed 0.3 kg and held 50 kg, giving it a strength to weight ratio of 166, which we were quite happy with. Our final failure was due to a construction failure where glue (gorilla glue) wicked down one of the strings - this led to uneven stretching and a force imbalance. We believe this bridge could have held more - we liked the arch and distributed tension member model. Weldment profiles need to be copied into C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\lang\english\weldment profiles\popsicle Done with Paul Titchener, Alex Crease, and Joe Kochevar
