While Dr Iskandar’s collection of bowls pays tribute to the master of porcelain, the late David Leach, it nonetheless asserts its own whimsical identity that is distinct from Leach’s sober and measured style. Dr Iskandar’s bowls are idiosyncratic and do not behave. They have irregular rims, punctured holes, small body nubs and even one that resists standing upright - returning to rest lopsided. Dr Iskandar’s writings on porcelain are illuminating. He extols porcelain’s virtues as producing bowls “so thin that they are filled with light” and which “vibrate” as if they were “made for some sacramental purpose”. He adds poetically that porcelain’s ephemerality seemed “almost like fragments of my memories” *. Still, he reveals it was “a kind of suffering” to work with porcelain because of its low plasticity and demanding nature and most of all because it was “not me” .
