This is a cupholder for the Porsche Boxster 987 that uses the space where the ashtray is and turns it into something practical and useul. The brackets are completely optional. The cupholder works fine without them but I installed them because I have a huge "Yeti" cup that sits here and this keeps it a bit more stable.
