Smiling heads originally formed part of ceramic figurines with outstretched arms (like this one) which have been found in groups surrounding high-status burials in southern Veracruz. They may represent individuals who were given an inebriating potion, perhaps cacao mixed with ololiohqui seeds (Morning Glory; Rivea Corymbosa) to induce euphoria before being sacrificed. The symbols on the headdresses possibly signify the patron deities of each month. This object is part of "Scan The World".
