It's one of the ten commandments! "Honour thy father and thy mother." I grabbed a more British version of that bible quote because I think the thees and thys are a little cooler, plus, you get honor with a "u!" Why did I quote the bible today, when I'm usually quoting my favorite video game? "We don't understand! You're totally not religious!" I know, but I don't believe any of Stephen King's books but I quote them too. The bible is a fantastic work of fiction - of biblical proportions - and it's got some good stuff in it. But why today? Okay, so my mom is a jeweler, and she has been for a very long time. I know when my dad was a jeweler, his desk was always a mess. Now my mom...much less of a mess. But how do you organize all these little tools? Buy a little red tool box? Probably not. These are precision tools, very expensive. They are designed to work on watches, and other jewelry, and have very specific purposes. So when I told my mom I could 3D design and print stuff, she asked for a desk organizer. Wow! She was very specific: she showed me this small brick of foam she'd been using to safely store her bench knives, and so that's where I started. The two slits on the left-hand side work great for holding knives - long or short. We gave a symmetrical distance on the top and bottom, and the "slit" goes almost all the way through, leaving you plenty of room for longer knives. I added the five smaller holes in the top, in a "5 dice" pattern, and when she saw the smaller holes rendered on the box, she asked if I could add another section for larger tools. She was very specific! Three larger holes on the right-hand side, and I arranged them in an "arrow" shape pointing to the right. These holes and arrangements, as you can see, work perfectly for my mom's bench tools. The holes go very deep into the block - leaving a few millimeters to keep things manifold and happy. You can print this in any color you'd like. I just happened to have PLA white on the printer, but I imagine, this would look cooler in a darker color like charcoal (why is that so hard to spell sometimes? It's just "char" and "coal" put together!) or black. The main thing is, this is a safe place to put a couple of knives (as long as they fit in the slits), and a bunch of tools (as long as they fit in the holes). If you'd like a custom version, I just need to know how many holes, what diameter and depth, and what arrangement. If you can download this, print it, and do an "I Made One" on Thingiverse, we can then communicate through words and pictures much more effectively. If you want your name on the final custom piece, I can totally do that. You may be into 3D design, and that's cool too. It's a brick of plastic with holes in it. Not really fancy or spectacular.
