Pressure Fit Spool Holder

Pressure Fit Spool Holder

# Overview I wanted to create a better spool holder. One that allows no random rotation and applies a constant but light force against rotation to have a smooth and continuous roll. I found one online that was all metal and looked pretty nice, but it was $40 (USD) and was something that could easily be designed and printed for much less. So here is what I came up with. I hope you all enjoy it. :) This can accommodate rolls of filament with an inner diameter from 40mm to 90mm. **Update 08/21/2021**: Updated the riser to have more material in the center which drastically reduced bending of the riser. # Hardware Needed 1. [M3 x 12mm Button Head Screws (Quantity 3)](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08H24W42K/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B08H24W42K&linkCode=as2&tag=teslaswild-20&linkId=4f9e6a54c02624938f59a164ee4a1e4e) 2. [M4 T Slot Nut (Quantity 2)](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08H24W42K/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B08H24W42K&linkCode=as2&tag=teslaswild-20&linkId=4f9e6a54c02624938f59a164ee4a1e4e) The links above are to the exact parts I used from Amazon. **Note 1**: As a designer it was much more affordable for me to purchase the assortment screw sets. But if you don't have the need for that many M3 and M4 screws, your local hardware store should have exactly what you need and you wont have thousands of extra screws. I do have to say that M3 and M4 screws are used everywhere in 3D printing projects, so they may be good to have around. Your choice. **Note 2**: I'm sure with some slight modifications to the mount (i.e. using a 5mm and 7mm drill bit) you could use your original filament holder hardware (Ender 3/CR10) which are M5 x 8mm Socket Head Cap screws and M5 T Slot Nuts. I may create a variant of the mount in the future to accommodate this. **Note 3**: You may be able to get away with printing [these 6000 bearings](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4821342) instead of purchasing metal ones, but I would worry about the pressure require to get the bearings into the Pressure Fits. Maybe with some sanding? Definitely leave a comment if you try this, I'd be interested to hear how it goes. **Note 4**: The spacers go on the "outsides" of each pressure fitting in order to ensure bearing rotation. I included a few different sizes just for fun. **Note 5**: The tolerances for the insert spaces for the bearings are very tight. I was able to get the inner bearing (top of Pressure Fit print) in by pressing down on the part and bearing on a table. As for the outer bearing (bottom / on build plate of Pressure Fit print), I ended up using some channellock pliers on the edges of the bearings. Be very careful to not damage the bearing housings. **Note 6**: I would recommend setting the infill to a **Cubic** pattern and printing with 50% infill for the **Mount**, **Riser**, and **Pressure Fits** as they will have a solid amount of applied force and torque, respectively. Especially on the screw rod and Riser joint. # Printed Parts | Part Number | Part Name | Filename | Quantity | | :---------------: | :-----------------: | :-------------------: | :----------: | | 1 | Mount | mount.stl | 1 | | 2 | Riser | riser.stl | 1 | | 3 | Spacer 10mm | spacer_10.stl | 2 | | 4 | Pressure Fit | pressure_fit.stl | 2 | | 5 | Hand Nut | hand_nut.stl | 1 |
