This is a smaller, 4-leaf redesign of Emmett's totally amazing Preassembled Iris Box (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1811143). After carefully studying Emmett's design and with his advice, I created a 60mm diameter version that prints much faster. To make it easier to print, I increased the internal clearances somewhat. Like Emmett's, it prints pre-assembled without any supports needed. Thanks, Emmett! Update: I added an STL file for just one leaf in response to someone wanting to replace a broken one. However, I'm unsure how easy it will be to get it assembled into place. Update: In my original version, the outer sphere was slightly wobbly when closed and could cause jams. I've updated it to prevent this problem from occurring. I also included the Solidworks (2011) model for anyone to hack on and make improvements. Print Settings: Printer Brand: MakerGear Printer: M2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2mm Infill: 20% Notes: Print with 0.2mm layers to ensure the internal gaps print properly. Post-Printing: The bottoms of the four leafs print directly on the table and can be seen in the four slots at the bottom. To prevent the leafs from breaking free during printing, I added four thin tabs attaching each leaf bottom to the outer ring. Use a razor blade or hobby knife to cut away these tabs. The outer sphere is actually a dial that rotates. To release it, stick a small screwdriver in the gap above the base ring and gently pry it free, working your way around the whole perimeter. Depending on how well your printer handles small gaps, you may need to insert a thin blade into the gaps at the top to free the leafs.
