Story time: My house has a peculiar arrangement on a couple of cupboards where a Gainsborough Hardware mechanism with a thread-on handle is mounted from one side only. I can only imagine the amount of VB consumed in the early 80s while this house was built. As I have been replacing all the old knobs with updated levers from Ikonic (I think it's just a bunnings brand, it may be sold by other names also), I realised that nobody makes a similar lever that can be mounted to only one side of a door, at least, not any that are budget friendly. As I am not super concerned about strike plates or mechanisms matching as they are only cupboards in a spare room, I created a bit of a knock off that could hopefully pass at a glance for the same unit installed elsewhere. Side note - I do not recommend the "privacy" type levers in the Ikonic range, in under 12 months I have had to disassemble, reshape and grease both of the units I have, so far so good for the non-locking "passage" type though. This thing is still a first version, some of the mechanisms do not have much of a return spring so the handle does not return to centre with a satisfying springy action, once I source a cheap enough suitable torsion spring I will update this accordingly. I printed this version in ABS with the intention of giving it an acetone bath down the track but that might wait for version 2, particularly as it decided to split just a little on the face of the handle (needed more juice on that end of the bed). This design uses the original 6mm square peg thingy (I am not a door-making guy, I don't know what to call it) and a single M3x25MM button head bolt commonly used in computer hardware or light duty fixings to hold the whole show together. The backing plate is 65mm total diameter with 40mm mounting hole spacing in case anybody else out there is insane enough to actually print this horror show out. As with the original design, there is a cover plate that slips on after the main screws are done up, this is "retained" by an elastic band pushed into the groove on the back plate. I am sure a thin O-ring would do a better job but this whole thing is a bodge anyway. First image with the wood door frame is the prototype print mounted to the door with no post processing other than slight sanding to make the action smooth, Second image with the black frame is the genuine cheapo lever set this whole thing is meant to look like, I accept high praise and light roasts of my replication. Section view with pretty colour coded bits included in case I am the only one who understands my own madness. Use at your own risk, or for pranking your room mates, maybe use lower infill in that case. Enjoy ?
