It provides a lower friction feed than placing spools directly on top of the powder-coated metal case (which is good for print quality). It also eliminates the fine powder that gets created as the spools rub on the case. Version 2 also allows you to print full height parts without the extruder motor hitting the spools sitting on top of the frame. If you haven't noticed, the NEMA motor actually sticks up above the frame at the top of the z travel. The tubing is "1/2-inch" (actually 0.84-inch OD) PVC tubing like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-1-2-in-x-10-ft-PVC-Sch-40-Plain-End-Pipe-530048/100113200?N=5yc1vZbuf5. You'll need two, 1-foot long lengths. Instructions I printed each piece with 0.3mm layer-thickness and 80mm/s speed as quality wasn't of the utmost importance. I used 20% infill. I've uploaded a left and right piece, as I'm using Simplify3D, which strangely doesn't allow you to mirror parts. If you are too you'll need to download both. Otherwise you can use one piece and mirror it. The 1-foot PVC tubing simply pushes in to the holes, and the printed pieces press fit on to the top corners of the printer. I took measurements from my own machine and the prints fit. I have no idea what Printrbot's tolerances are, so if you have a fit issue, please let me know and I'll loosen things up.
