Support is absolutely necessary! I modified this spool holder to fit perfectly with the Alu Handle from Simple. The original design had a problem with Z height, causing it to mash into the handle. The modification gives me an extra 17 mm of travel, but still limits travel somewhat. I'm able to get 237 out of 250 mm with the handle installed. If you need to print taller objects, simply remove the handle temporarily. I included a spacer that keeps the spool away from the Y arm. I also added a shorter sleeve for spools up to 75 mm wide, which is available as an AMF file in Cura. This sleeve has a larger clearance for the hole. If you can't open it, I included the original sleeve 'Spool_Holder_Ver3b.stl', which you can scale accordingly.
