Prize: 3D Printers for Peace Contest

thingiverse

3D printing is being condemned in the media because of the potential for printing guns. We believe there is far more potential for 3D printers to make our lives better rather than killing one another. To encourage thinking about constructive uses of 3D printing technology Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology (MOST) Lab and Type A Machines is proud to sponsor the first 3-D Printers for Peace Contest. Entry Guidelines can be found at: http://www.mtu.edu/materials/printersforpeace/ We are challenging the 3D printing community to design things that advance the cause of peace. Come up with a good design and win a free 3D printer. Deadline is OVER. This component is part of an open source lab library, by the Michigan Tech's Open Sustainability Technology Research Group. Instructions The zip files are for the Michigan Tech's MOST version of the RepRap Prusa Mendel open-source 3D printer kit. The RepRap can be built in a weekend. It has a 7.8 -by-7.8-by-6.8-inch build volume on a heated bed, prints comfortably at 80 mm/sec ABS, 45 mm/sec PLA, HDPE and PVA with 0.1 mm resolution. Assembly instructions with images on Appropedia Thanks to Jerry for the designs. For some ideas on ways 3D printers could be used for sustainable development see this or consider more complicated devices that use 3D printing as a major component such as this [open-source colorimeter]( http://www.academia.edu/3333921/Open-Source_Colorimeter)
