The human body is a complex system made up of numerous organs and tissues that work together to sustain life. The brain, which is responsible for processing information and controlling movement, is located in the skull and is protected by a thick layer of tissue called the meninges. The heart, which pumps blood throughout the body, is a muscular organ that is located in the chest cavity. It beats approximately 100,000 times per day, pumping over 2,000 gallons of blood through its chambers. The lungs, which are responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide, are two organs that are located in the thoracic cavity. The digestive system begins with the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva before being swallowed down into the esophagus and then into the stomach. The stomach secretes digestive enzymes that break down proteins and fats, which are then absorbed by the small intestine and distributed throughout the body. The skeletal system provides support and protection for the body, consisting of 206 bones that are connected by joints and ligaments. The muscles of the body are responsible for movement and are attached to the bones via tendons.
