Quaternary structure of human deoxyhemoglobin from 2HHB atomic coordinates. Each chain was printed separately as surface and can be used to assemble the final molecule. The hem molecules were removed and can be printed separately (as balls and sticks or surface) and manually inserted and removed from the binding pocket. This is useful to argue the quaternary structure of proteins, as well as protein-ligand interactions. I made this to use it for teaching Biochemistry and Structural Biology.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

Ender 5

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2

Infill:

20

Filament:
generic PLA

Notes:

Print Units: mm
Scale At Given Print Units: 200x for peptide chains, 160x for heme molecules as surface, 200x hem molecules as balls and stiks

Build time: 11 hours each chain

Pre- and Postprocessing Instructions: The model was re-orientated in Cura so that the opening for the hem binding pocket will be upwards. This way, the amount of support inside the binding pocket was minimum. Nevertheless, some support was built inside the pocket but it was easy to remove. Gcode for chain A, B, and C have the hem molecule at 180x, 170x and 160x and will not fit the binding pocket. Gcode for chain D has the hem scaled at 140% and will fit the pocket. Printed at 0.2 resolution with wall 3 lines. I have used concentric supports and found to be easier to remove. The support removal was a bit tricky for the hem as balls and sticks.

Category: Biology
