Here is my entry for the Rabaconda Portable Bike Racer Tool Desk Challenge. I planned my entry around 1. The closed toolbox being able to hold all tools in the same area as when opened (no rearranging tools during setup), and 2. Having a large working surface Instead of a more “normal” design, I opted for maximizing the working surface by making the toolbox open up completely into a small table. In order to minimize height when closed while also retaining the ability to hold a full paper towel roll (as well as the other required components), I put the working surface on one side of the toolbox, to be folded in half. The toolbox can be initially set up as a tripod to make it easier to completely open the lid and place the remaining two legs. The center leg also provides necessary support. Box Dimensions: 800 x 400 x 237.5 mm Total Dimensions (including hardware and protrusions): 835 x 435 x 275 Notes Concerning Design Requirements: Clamps ensure the inside of the box is dust and weatherproof. Wall mounts are on the bottom of the box’s base and the lid’s leg supports. Large tools can be put in the pockets of the fold-out panel. Small tools and components can go into the drawers. Safety glasses can be put in a drawer or on the loop of the fold-out panel. Drawers are taller than 55mm. Working surface is 800mm from the ground. Notes Concerning Manufacturing Costs: Most components (base, lid, legs, drawers) can be made from durable plastic to minimize weight and manufacturing costs as compared to other materials. Simple geometries and component designs will be easy and cheap to produce. Fittings can either be standard hardware or snap-together parts. Additional Notes: Dividers can easily be added to the larger drawers. Collapsible panel can be made from durable fabric. The collapsible panel ensures that the inner drawer will stay closed. Likewise, the inner drawer will ensure that the large tools don’t slide out of their pockets. Magnets on the lid cover and the base ensure that the external drawers are secured. Rubber feet provide flat resting when toolbox is closed as well as a cushion between the lid and the base when opened. Flexible plastic spray paint can holders accommodate for small variations in can size Thanks to GrabCAD users for the safety glasses, the hinges, and the clasps!
