Military aviation was first developed during the First World War, as countries realized the potential for planes to support ground troops and conduct aerial battles. The Royal Flying Corps, which later became the RAF, was founded in 1912 as part of Britain's defense efforts, and was given control over British aircraft in 1918. As more countries began building their own military forces, tensions rose between them, leading eventually to the outbreak of war in 1914. This new technology played a major role in modern warfare from then on, allowing military units to launch swift attacks or conduct long-lasting engagements that often involved thousands of pilots and machines. Britain quickly became one of the leaders in air combat after its aircraft carriers began building planes like the Biplane Fe2b, an aircraft known for having the most power at such low heights. The Allies would eventually go on to defeat the Germans, bringing the devastating conflict finally to a close in 1918.
