Raiders of the Lost Ark Nazi Crate

Raiders of the Lost Ark Nazi Crate

thingiverse

This is a recreation of the WWII German crate as seen in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. I looked around for something similar but couldn't find anything so I just made my own. I used Hatchbox wood filament which I think turned out great. It was my first project with wood filament and I'm happy with the results although there was a lot of cleanup post-print as pictured above. I though it was a little strange that it would still extrude even in between actual printing, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Maybe I just needed to turn down my extrusion multiplier a little but it was only .94 with a .35mm nozzle. When it was printing, it smelled of rich mahogany. But seriously it really did have a nice wood smell when it was printing. Almost smelled like there was a camp fire nearby. I went back and forth in my head with the options of either having the German stencil as pictured or just to place a large black mark in place of the graphic and lettering as in the movie scene after the crate was burnt by God. I decided on the former (obviously) for my model. I chose to print the lid top side up because I wanted the top of it to maintain it's wood slat look. I don't know if it helped or not but it wasn't a pain at all to remove the small amount of filament support underneath. I did however have to do some serious carving on the interior lid sides to get it to fit onto the crate as I built it a little too snug. Not to worry though, after I fixed my physical lid I went back into Tinkercad and resized the inside of the lid for "hopefully" a proper fit for those that want to print this out. For the rope handles I ran a length of my 1.75mm wood filament through the gear that grabs the filament then I backed it back out and cut about a 2 inch length off, painted it a darker brown color, stuck it through the crate holes and burned the filament from the inside of the crate so that it couldn't slip back out. It held it in place nicely and didn't take too much flame to manipulate it. I think the gear marks give it a nice rope look. I made the crate model with rope holes but when it printed out I had to get a small drill bit and bore it out in order to slide the filament through. Again though, while I was in Tinkercad fixing the lid issue, I went ahead and widened the holes some so hopefully you wont have an issue with clogged rope holes. For the stencil, I just got a picture of the crate movie still from the interweb, put it in photoshop, made it a black graphic on a white background, saved the .jpg and ran it through converter software, (here's the link so you can do it yourself if you want: http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-svg), placed the converted .SVG file into Tinkercad, extended the lettering and placed a rectangle behind it and created a hand stamp. I then spread some water-based black acrylic paint onto some foam paper I picked up at Michaels, placed the stamp in the paint and carefully placed it over the crate area and firmly pressed down. It took me 3 attempts at the same crate area to get enough paint onto it. I would recommend using a liberal amount of paint for this to avoid multiple pressings, but mine still worked. Plus it's water-based and probably would have come off fine if a large mistake was made. Oh, and if you weren't interested in any of the Raiders of the Lost Ark stuff, I've also included a file of a crate without the handle brackets. That way it's just simply a crate. The dimensions are as follows: Crate 5 3/8" long 3 1/4" wide 2 3/4" high Lid 5 3/8" long 3 1/4" wide 5/16" high Handles 10 1/4" long 1/16" wide 3/8" high Just for reference I have pictured above the crate pretty much as it appeared in the film. It's a recreation but damn close. Share your makes. I'd be interested to see what you come up with. Have fun, folks!
