R. Buckminster Fuller stated, "To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." This concept applies to the development of additive manufacturing technologies, which necessitates a re-design of many components. In traditional multistage machining and assembly, complexity affected production costs; however, 3D printing enables a single cycle process that simplifies design and reduces cost. Designers can now create lightweight yet strong parts. A preliminary design exercise involved re-imagining a classical stopper in three variants: one maintaining traditional titanium specifications, another aiming for bending resistance and self-alignment, and the final option featuring a 1mm thin shell with reinforced support bars. While this last variant demonstrated increased strength, it requires further development. The experience underscores the need to rethink simple designs in light of new technologies.
