The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is native to the eastern half of the United States. As forest birds, they are rather versatile in their habitats ranging from swampy woodland to mixed pine/hardwood forests. They do not migrate. While mating, they are monogamous but do not tend to mate with one bird for life. Males attract females by tapping on trees, calling out and drumming.
