This red plastic mine helmet was produced in 1960s and used in the Oranje-Nassau Mijnen in Heerlen. The mining company had their own colour system for the helmets defining the roles of their employees. Because it was loud in the mines with the drilling, explosions and machine noises, a coloured helmet could communicate the role of the workers to avoid verbal communications in a noisy environment.Different colours indicated different roles within the company: Yellow helmet: Coal miner Red helmet: Techinician Blue helmet: Electrician White helmet: Supervisor Location: Nederlands Mijnmuseum, Heerlen (Limburg) Created by: Yuen Fei, Li
