The spigot on Reliance water jugs are notorious for not sealing well, and/or cracking due to over-tightening due to poor alignment of the spigot. This gasket serves as both a seal, and wiggle room for rotating the spigot another 180 degrees once it has sealed, preventing stress fractures.
