Replicator 2X Extruder Base/Adaptor for Flexible Filaments
thingiverse
In an update, Version 2 of a modified extruder was uploaded on February 28th, 2014. The changes included minor adjustments to margins for improved fit, addition of a small support tab for better stability, and mirroring the design for left-sided extruders. A possible third version is in consideration, with an opened outer margin that allows viewing of the drive gear. The past 48 hours have seen smooth loading, unloading, and printing of both ABS and NinjaFlex filaments. This design is derived from rmcniff's work (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:222667) to fit with DHeadrick's 3in1 Universal Extruder upgrade (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:136423). After acquiring NinjaFlex filament, the user experienced similar feed issues discussed in the MakerBot Operators Google Group (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/makerbot/ninjaflex/makerbot/KUwEIXMlVtk/Mcze9mt0hskJ). However, the 3in1 Replicator 2X aluminium extruder upgrade performed efficiently. To address the filament's flexibility causing buckling during loading and printing, the base of rmcniff's extruder was modified to interface with the 3in1 universal upgrade using Geomagic Studio for component subtraction and hand editing. The result was successful printing in both NinjaFlex and ABS filaments without air prints. Photos will be posted soon, and minor design modifications are expected. Printing instructions: MakerWare sliced settings include 25% infill, 3 shells, and 0.15mm layer height with supports. Filament guide hole may require reaming for smooth passage.
