This representation shows the variation in the length of day and night throughout the year. Its purpose is a kind of permanent visual memory aid to be fixed to the wall; for gardeners, for example, among others. Because the feeling of being in the right or the wrong season is very much based on the temperatures, sometimes one is caught up in the rhythm of the crops because of cold weather in the spring, or good weather that lasts into the fall. This is a reminder of how much seasonal light counts for plants. -The outer plate represents the months of the year in Roman numerals. -The intermediate plate represents the day, in hours. A bar is present for the solstices and equinoxes. A hollow mark matches the hours with the months. Thus one has an idea of the length of the day and its variation. -the plaque in the center represents the night. It is good to print the intermediate plate in a light or bright colour to represent the day, and the centre plate in a dark colour to represent the night. This is not a precision instrument. The durations give an idea for temperate latitudes, such as around 45 degrees north. It doesn't work at the poles or the equator anymore. The pieces must be glued together, nothing must move, despite appearances it is not made to turn.
