This tire tool concept takes inspiration from Dave's (AKA NoScuff, http://www.no-scufftiretool.com/) tire tool as well as the Mojolever (http://home.comcast.net/~prestondrake/mojoweb.htm). These guys have great tools that make changing tires much easier. We wanted a tool to help us remove one bead while the wheel is still mounted on the bike. Some riders will remove one side of the tire, pull the tube out, patch it, and re-install the tire. This tool is intended to make that process easy, fast, and safe for rider and equipment. Also, when packed up, the whole package fits in a 16x3" tube! Some of our additional constraints: ultraportable: want to carry in a pack usable by one person (for traveling alone) usable with moto gloves We don't have time to model the tire install end effector, but the demount end effector can be removed and replaced with the appropriate install tool. There exist some great designs that could be easily adapted for this application (see websites, above). All components probably ought to be steel, with the install/demount tools having plastic pads where necessary, or formed bodies of plastic mounted to a steel shaft. I'll let you know if we build a prototype... :)
