Gun reputed to have been used in an incident during the Civil War at Ballymacool House, Letterkenny Donated to the Museum by Mr Barney Sweeney, Letterkenny In February 1922, the IRA took over Ballymacool House and Rockhill House, Letterkenny. The Civil War in Ireland began on the 28th June 1922. The conflict followed the signing of the Treaty which effectively ended the War of Independence and accompanied the establishment of the Irish Free State. At 5am on 29th June 1922, two groups of Pro-Treaty (Free State) forces left Letterkenny to attack the Anti-Treaty IRA force at Ballymacool House.
