Rhombicosidodecahedron

thingiverse

This is a remix of sorts. it was to replace a similar structure here on thingiverse with flaws in the STL facet geometry, the punch outs for each facet were originally made from mathematically shrunken triangles in the skin of the polyhedron. But by shrinking the triangles used to make up the square and pentagonal facets, some gaps occurred between the triangular columns (thing#4065025). The approach here fixes that problem by using the data from http://dmccooey.com/polyhedra/ to shrink the facets/polygons about a central point and then offsetting them initially along the vector cross product to make hat box shaped cutouts. That approach was then modified. These central points are here represented in the openscad script as matrix b[ ], The vectors in matrix b are generally orthagonal to each facet surface and terminate at the central points for all facets. Data here is suitable for calculating locations for adding embossing or other features.. Included here is a faux twinkling Christmas ornament, an MP4 animation made from Openscad ( I know, pretty silly) captured frames. Some variations have been made and are made possible that I will try to add back here at a later time.. Well, thingiverse wouldn't take the movie file so I am going to put it here: http://www.gunstar1.com/scad.mp4 Should be up by 10/29/2021...
